I\'m so sorry you were unsettled by that description. I went back to reread what I\'d written and found \"black, young, and disinterested.\" Mac goes on to wonder how many homicides had been reported to this particular operator. He suggests she\'s become inured to hearing about death because of her job (not because of her race!) Still, I do understand that s omeone black or young might read that and come to the conclusion that I was suggesting she was disinterested because of those desc riptives. That was certainly NOT my intent, but I do apologize for being insensitive to the possibility. Too much \"writer\" in that passage, I think, as I was trying to take the reader into Mac\'s thought process. I\'m so, SO sorry!

I have become a new fan of yours through recent book purchases of The Bogey Man & The Suicide Club, both excellent books. I am currently reading The Victim and I have hit of bit of a snag. You see I have just read the description of the 911 dispatch operator. The operator\'s voice is described as black & disinterested. The fact that the sound of a voice has been used to negatively define an African American was somewhat unsettling to me. You see I am an African American, which perhaps you were able to ascertain that fact from my writing style. Could not the operator\'s voic e just have been disinterested, bored, or just simply tired. I honestly did not see the need to assign race to a voice. Especially when negative adjectives are used in the description of a character.

Wow. I just finished Victim. It was fantastic. I could not put it down until I completed the entire book. Each month I like to search for authors that I have never read before. I chose your book this month. I was not disappointed. I will add you to my li st of must read authors. Keep writing.
